In 1993, rumors surface by friends and foes of Bret Schundler's infidelity. The name of the woman also became well know. These rumors re-surfaced by Jersey Journal columnist Peter Weiss when Schundler took out radio ads requesting the resignation of President Clinton during the impeachment hearings.
It is difficult to prove issues related to infidelity but some information on sexual misconduct just glare in the newspapers.
Mayor Schundler never asked for the resignation of Ervin Haynes, President of the Library Board and the Director of HEDC when the city paid $20,000 to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit.
Bret Schundler was quiet about the criminal charge of sexual abuse, facing Russell Wallace, a member of the Jersey City Ethical Standards Board. Why? He appointed Wallace to the Board.
Again, Schundler was quiet when Reverend Colon, an at-large councilman and a staunch supporter was removed as pastor because of sexual misconduct brought by the reverend's church. Using the same standard why wasn't Reverend Colon asked to resign? When is sexual misconduct wrong? Only when the President Clinton is guilty?
Bret Schundler was elected as a reformer who has ties to Wall Street. Schundler allowed liens to be sold to a Wall Street firm at a discount while he foreclosed on poor folks homes.
Schundler has restricted free speech. Municipal employees had to have their "letters to the editor" approved. His administration passed an ordinance on leaflets "hand outs". Even his corporation council said this ordinance would not pass constitutional muster so the ordinance was re-worded.
Schundler had the home advantage of using taxpayers' money to mail his propaganda. Yet he passed this ordinance restricting free speech.
Former Mayor Rakowski had to sue the city to receive a
copy of the bulk lien sale. Public information, not related to the City
Clerk's office, is not available.
